2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid is a multifunctional water-soluble anionic surfactant monome. It is a white crystalline powder with a sour odor. 0.1% aqueous solution is hygroscopic and water-soluble, with a solubility of 150 g/100 g in water at 25°C. Soluble in DMF, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, insoluble in acetone, toluene and other solvents. It is a strong acid. The pH of the aqueous solution is related to its concentration. The dry monomer is stable at room temperature, but the aqueous solution is very easy to polymerize, and the sodium salt aqueous solution is relatively stable. This product has a polymerizable vinyl group and a hydrophilic sulfonic acid group in the molecule, which can be copolymerized with water-soluble monomers such as acrylonitrile and acrylamide, and non-water-soluble monomers such as styrene and vinyl chloride. The introduction of hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups into polymers makes fibers, films, etc. hygroscopic, water-permeable, and conductive. Can be used in paper industry and wastewater treatment. Stability

Stable at room temperature. In aqueous solution, the speed of monomer hydrolysis is very slow, but a polymerization inhibitor must be added to prevent its self-polymerization; the aqueous solution of sodium salt has excellent hydrolysis resistance under the condition of pH value greater than 9; homopolymer has good hydrolysis resistance of thermal stability.

Polymerizability

AMPS monomer can be homopolymerized or copolymerized. The average heat of polymerization of AMPS in water is 22 kcal/mol. Both water and dimethylformamide can be used as polymerization medium.
